If you are hiring, or considering a move, the key is understanding what each salary band typically buys you in capability, remit and expectations.
1. Entry-level and internal positions: £30,000–£35,000
These positions are usually the engine room: internal sales, customer support, order processing, account coordination and junior commercial support.
- High volume, fast pace and considerable stakeholder management
- Strong administration and relationship skills matter as much as sales
- Often a stepping stone into field sales, education or account management
In practice, progression can be quick when someone becomes commercially confident and can handle accounts independently.
2. Field sales, territory and salon development: low to mid £40,000s
Top performers can command £50,000–£60,000. A solid benchmark for an established UK territory is a mid-£40,000s base, £12,000–£20,000 achievable OTE and a car or car allowance.
- You are paying for someone who can run a patch like a business
- Strong performers build plans, protect revenue and grow share, rather than simply visiting salons
- Credible commission and OTE are often where brands win or lose candidates
If the territory has been neglected, under-resourced or is heavily price-driven, you will usually need to pay above benchmark to attract someone capable of turning it around.
3. Strategic and key accounts: £48,000–£60,000 base
Packages can reach the early to mid £70,000s. Once accounts become strategic, including distributors, larger chains or multi-site groups, the pay band moves because the risk and complexity move.
- More forecasting, margin discussions and terms negotiations
- Joint business planning and complex internal stakeholder management
- Protecting margin rather than using discounting as a strategy
4. Sales leadership: £60,000–£70,000 base plus 20–30% bonus
National and regional sales leaders typically sit here, particularly when managing teams, regions or a meaningful commercial number. Coaching and performance management become the position, rather than being the best individual salesperson.
If you are asking for change leadership, such as a culture reset, restructure or new route to market, the benchmark band will often need flexibility.
5. Education: still a core pillar and increasingly commercial
- Field educators: £38,000–£40,000
- Education managers: £50,000–£60,000
- Senior education leaders: £65,000–£90,000+, particularly for cross-country or commercial remits
Technical excellence alone is no longer the differentiator. The premium is paid when education drives conversion, retention and category growth. If you want education to move numbers, hire and reward it like a commercial function.
6. Marketing and trade marketing: £35,000–£80,000
Mid-level positions often sit around £35,000–£45,000, while senior brand leaders and heads of function typically land between £60,000–£80,000. The premium goes to people who can execute in-channel, not simply build brand decks.
7. Senior commercial leadership: £90,000–£180,000+
UK Heads of Sales and Commercial Directors generally start at around £90,000 base and can move beyond £120,000. Regional and global remits within multinational or private-equity-backed businesses often reach £120,000–£180,000+, with meaningful bonus and long-term incentives.
At this level you are paying for strategic decisions around route to market, margin, pricing, team structure and distributor strategy. Senior candidates compare the total package, autonomy and credibility of the growth plan, not base salary alone.
Manufacturer versus distributor
Distributors and family-owned businesses may sit below manufacturer base salaries, but can balance this with richer commission structures, stronger car schemes, flexibility and autonomy. Candidates will often choose the lower base when earning potential is clearer and the culture is better.
What is shaping pay in 2026
- Demand for experienced, sector-specific talent
- Cost-of-living pressure and rising candidate expectations
- Increased competition between brands for proven performers
- A widening gap between acceptable offers and market-leading packages
